Progressive Edge is proud to be graced with the artwork of two wonderful artists from New Zealand, Paul and Kristie Rogers. Residing in Auckland, New Zealand, their work involves Graphic Art and Design, utilizing both traditional and computer graphics techniques. The integrated styles lend an otherworldly effect, whilst still maintaining a firm foot on the ground. Both Paul and Kristie have spent many years studying their art, and have worked to develop unique and complementary styles and techniques. Their work is jointly represented under their company name "Red Moon Design", and we see here some examples of their artwork. These are available here as well as from Red Moon, in many cases directly through PayPal, or you can contact us at Progressive Edge. We will also feature their new and exciting projects as they create and develop.
Paul and Kristie also can provide custom graphics solutions. They can be reached directly by email at Red Moon Design.

"There is an aspect to artmaking that is analogous to travelling along a road. The last four years have found me travelling in a new and exciting direction. Another aspect, Activated surfaces, has always inspired me. Whether they are textural or minimal; in a limited key or accompanied by a full blown explosion of colour. The Heart paintings from 1999 and 2000 are examples of where I explored this interest whilst still working within the restraints of maintaining a motif.
Subsequent works leading up to this new series "Evocative Direction", have increasingly reduced things to the point of eliminating the motif element completely. These newer works have concentrated on allowing the elements of juxtaposed, rectangular print media samples to form the primary, focal concern of the composition attempting, in the process, to evoke an experience bordering on the musical."
Paul Rogers - March 2003

Recent Works and Shows 2002 / 2003
This work deals with a juxtaposition of mans historic immortalization of his own image in time (c435 BC actually so the head is greek/roman) with the ephemeral (ie short lifespan) of a colorful creature, the butterfly. Resplendent in all its glory and exhibition of colour this fragile creature exists for only a short time in the grand scheme of things and impresses apon us a sense of wonder and respect. Hence the title,"Time".
Time is available framed from Red Moon for a total price of $400 (NZD). Red Moon can be reached at redmoon@xtra.co.nz.

Yescapade Art by Red Moon Design
We were proud to have been able to have their beautiful work as the official art of our Yescapade event for the last two years. In addition to a very nice painting, we have a number of posters that they created that are for sale here. Paul and Krisite are also responsible for our Yescapade logo.
We created a historical page, normally seen at the Yescapade site which walks you through the various stages of the graphics development process. We are always interested in this kind of process and are heppy that Paul and Kristie were willing to share it with us. We are sure that you will also find it quite fascinating:

Paintings- Early Works
Paul started producing many of his works in the mid-1990s. These pieces have been selected from a series of four gallery shows on various life stages that were produced by Paul from the years 1992 to 1996. Each of the shows was based on the general theme that a drawing is created by a collaboration between artist and model. If you wish to purchase one of these paintings, simply click on the piece, and it will take you to PayPal. Note that prices include shipping, but do not include optional shipping insurance.

In 1999, Paul was studying for his Bachelors Degree in Graphic Design, and as part of his studies, he produced one years worth of Heart paintings, one for each day of the year for a total of 365 paintings. Each image was produced on the day in question and date-stamped. The first six months (178 paintings) of images were combined together and animated using Adobe Premier and then orchestrated with "Preludo Metaphor Ennui", an instrumental soundtrack designed for the project. Another seventy five were snapped up by collectors at a Gallery show in Auckland in early 2000. The images below are all one of a kind pieces selected from Paul's remaining collection of approximately fifty. Note that prices include shipping, but do not include optional shipping insurance.

Paul Rogers Paul was born in Dewsbury, England in 1959. His family emigrated to Auckland New Zealand in 1975 where, after high school, Paul was given the opportunity to attend Auckland University studying a Bachelors degree in Science majoring in Astrophysics (1978-79). After several years working in consumer electronics Paul shifted his interests and studied preliminary Art in various Polytechnic night classes. He then enrolled full time in a Diploma of Graphic Design and upon graduation in 1990 became employed by the School of Art and Design (Auckland University of Technology) as a Graphic Design Technician. Paul has been creating comics, cartoons and illustrative sequential art for nearly 15 years. From early beginnings working on Cornelius Stone’s ‘Razor’ in the mid eighties; the self publication ‘Shards’ (co-produced with Stephen Jewell) c.1987; founding ‘Tuatara Press’ which publishes work of current and former Graphic Design students of the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) including Kelvin Soh, Ant Sang, Simon Rattray and Alex Beart in anthologies ‘Mainstream’ issues 1 and 2 (1995 and 1997); ‘Issue One’ and ‘Drivel’ in Australia and his own minicomic series ‘Cash’ to the most recent work for a proposed web-published version of ‘Mainstream’ issue 3, Paul has always attempted to imbue his work with a special attention to craft, respect for storytelling design and capturing a special ‘art’ quality. He has brought a lot of this to comics from his free-lance illustration work as well as paintings for numerous gallery exhibitions. (Paragraph courtesy of: NZDA at the School of Art and Design, Auckland University of Technology). For the past twelve years Paul has continued to work for the school while also managing to juggle freelance illustration and Design work; a passion for local Comic Art production; part time teaching; completing a Bachelors Degree in Graphic Design (1999-2000) and, most importantly, Parenthood. Paul has a studio at home where he tries to squeeze in as many extra projects as possible including paintings for Gallery shows and a recent new interest in Live Concert photography. In his spare time Paul plays soccer, collects American superhero Comics and also collects live Yes recordings as well as contributing to numerous online Yes discussion forums as nzyesfan. In the future, Paul and Kristie would like to further their collaborative efforts (Red Moon Design) and create a new, modern studio based Design and Graphic Arts business partnership. |
In 1991 she enrolled at Auckland Institute of Technology (now a university) studying Computer Publishing and Design. She then completed a course in Production Graphic Design. Whilst a student, Kristie and Paul met and fell in love. They were married in 1993. After travelling around Europe for 4 months, they returned to Auckland and Kristie landed a job working in publishing. After 2 years she was promoted to Art Director of NZ Business Magazine and Ad/Media magazine (based at the advertising industry). Needing more of a challenge Kristie got a new job working for Shortland Publications designing, producing and writing children's books, mostly for the American market. She stayed for 3 years until she got pregnant and left on maternity leave. At this time she was approached by an opposition company who offered her a 2 year contract to set up her own business and work from home. Red Moon Design was now born. Now Kristie's business encompasses many design genres from publishing to advertising to packaging to writing. Her big dream is to publish her own books for both children and adults, as well as explore other creative pursuits. She would also like to one day return to university and obtain a degree by the time she is 40 (like her husband). Kristie's biggest accomplishment though all of her success is their beautiful daughter Jennifer who is the light of her life and her biggest inspiration to better herself. |
